Abstract: The current pandemic has stirred up a whirlwind of activity for anyone in the indoor air quality business. As building owners, facility managers, consulting engineers, contractors and others look to find feasible IAQ solutions for occupied indoor spaces, one of the technologies that has risen to the forefront is called Needle-Point Bipolar Ionization (NPBI). We will discuss what this technology is (and what it isn’t) along with best practices for how NPBI can be implemented as a complimentary measure toward IAQ improvement for any facility with any HVAC system. While NPBI continues to gain much notoriety as a result of its tested ability to deactivate SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 virus), we’ll also discuss the long-lasting benefits which include the ability to control mold, odors, smoke, VOCs, airborne particulate, allergens and even bacteria growth on cooling coils.


About the Speakers

David Schurk, PE, Global Plasma Solutions, Director of Business Development
David is a Licensed Designer of Engineering Systems with over 38-years of experience in the design and analysis of heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning systems for a variety of market sectors, with a special focus on hospital/healthcare environmental control and indoor air quality. In previous positions he worked for three of the world’s largest HVAC manufactures, including Carrier, Daikin, and Trane.

David attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering and is a LEED-AP who has been involved in the conception, design, and selection of HVAC systems for a number of projects achieving LEED certified status. He is also an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer, a Certified Energy Manager (CEM), a Certified Demand Side Manager CDSM), a Certified Water Efficiency Professional (CWEP), a Certified Sustainable Facilities Professional (SFP), a Board Certified Indoor Air Quality Manager (CIAQM), and is Health Care Constructor Certified (HCCC). He is active in the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE) as Member and serving on the ASHE Editorial Advisory Board, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) as Member and past Chapter President, the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), and many other national and regional industry associations.

David has authored numerous technical articles for industry magazines and journals including ASHRAE, Medical Construction & Design, Healthcare Design, Engineered Systems, Heating-Piping & Air-Conditioning, and others. He is a featured presenter at national, international, and regional industry associations and events. 


Dan Russell, PE, Norbryhn Equipment Company, Applications Engineer

Dan is a licensed engineer in the State of Idaho with over 12-years of background experience in design and consulting for building mechanical systems including energy and airflow analysis. Dan is a member of ISHE, ASHE and the Idaho chapter of ASHRAE, having served as Idaho Chapter President in 2018-19 and now serving as ASHRAE Region IX Membership Promotion RVC. Dan has experience with a variety of building types and system applications and currently uses that background to serve Idaho engineers, building owners and facility managers through technical education and support in making equipment and system applications decisions for all kinds of HVAC needs. In recent months, a majority of Dan’s time has been committed to helping customers respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, which in large part has included education and training on the benefits and application of Needle-Point Bipolar Ionization (NPBI) technology.
