DESCRIPTION:Location: Online Webinar Series Online Webinar Series ID \nShare We are opening registration for the ASHRAE Idaho Technical Series. As mentioned in the previous announcement this is taking the place of this year’s Technical Conference that has been disrupted by COVID-19. The technical series will consist of eight lunch hour live technical presentations available to all ASHRAE Idaho members for free. These online presentations will begin on Thursday\, May 14th and run each Tuesday and Thursday through June 9th. The presentations will be provided by local\, regional and national experts discussing industry relevant topics\, just like at our annual technical conference. We know that our local industry peers rely on the technical conference to stay informed on about trends\, technology\, and opportunities for improvement while fulfilling professional development requirements. This technical series is a way to continue providing that service under the current restrictions. Below is a list showing the full schedule of topics. His current research focus is on the integration of surface temperatures into building energy management systems. In the office\, he spends his time working on energy models and estimating savings from energy upgrades; out of the office he is usually fly fishing or gardening. Dr. Woods earned his B.S. from Montana State University\, his M.S. from Boise State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Idaho. Topic: ACHIEVING THERMAL COMFORT IN DESIGN AND PRACTICE Human comfort is more than just a number on a thermostat. ASHRAE’s thermal comfort standard (Standard 55 – 2017) includes many factors that affect occupant satisfaction including air velocity\, clothing levels\, and outdoor conditions. Idaho St. Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Speaker: Wesley Stanfill – Chapter President Topic: ASHRAE’s New Strategic Plan This plan\, developed by the ASHRAE Planning Committee in collaboration with the Board of Directors\, will guide the work of the Society during the five-year period from 2019-2024. It was developed during 2018-2019 through a process initiated by a stakeholder engagement exercise involving members of ASHRAE and key industry organizations who gave their views on ASHRAE’s position in the industry and its perceived strengths and challenges. With facilitation by the Planning Committee\, the BOD then conducted a brainstorming session to develop preliminary objectives and initiatives. These included both outward-facing issues affecting the industry and society as well as inward-facing issues related to the needs of ASHRAE members and organizational efficiency. The final phase of development was preparation of implementation plans\, tracking procedures\, promotional roll-out and budget estimates. The final plan was drafted by the Planning Committee with board oversight following multiple reviews\, including review by Regional leadership teams. Communication of the new plan to councils and committees began in Spring 2019 with formal implementation beginning in July 2019. Now that natural refrigerant technologies are mainstream\, we've begun to see the system selection process shift to comparisons between the various natural refrigerants . How do carbon dioxide\, ammonia\, and propane compare to each other in terms of market penetration\, cost\, energy efficiency\, and performance? We will provide insights from an engineering consultants perspective. Speaker: Dustin Lilya PE\, DC Engineering Dustin is a graduate of the University of Idaho with a variety of experience including stints at both Micron and Supervalu before joining the team at DC Engineering in 2011. Most of us don’t prioritize our time well\, and as a result we confuse urgent priorities with unimportant reminders or basic tasks. This can lead to procrastination on the most important work we have on our plate. In this session\, we’ll talk about various methods to manage your inbox\, keep your to-do list organized\, and be more productive. Speaker: Pam Duffy\, P.E. is a Senior Product Manager for Lennox International. As a product manager\, Pam is responsible for strategic direction\, product roadmaps\, new product development\, launches and sunsets\, and ongoing product category support. She has a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Central Florida and earned her P.E. license in 2013. Pam is a nationally-recognized advocate for VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) technology in North America. She has regularly contributed to formal publications\, such as the NEWS\, as well as more informal avenues such as LinkedIn. Pam has delivered hundreds of presentations on VRF technology at events such as ASHRAE society conferences. In addition\, Pam contributes her expertise to technical groups. There are a handful of key points during a project that can have long lasting impact on the performance of a facility. Project leaders who build these critical process into their work can realize substantial financial savings for the organizations they work for. Speaker: Jesse Barnum\, Building Services Manager St. Luke’s Meridian Medical Center Jesse thought he knew what he wanted to be when he grew up\, so he earned a B.A in Philosophy from Boise State University along with German\, Latin\, and History minors. He didn’t realize that philosophy majors were notoriously unemployable\, so he decided to earn M.S. in Technology from Purdue University. Philosophy and Technology degrees may seem like an odd mix\, but it’s worked out better than ex-pected and he has learned to develop dynamic solutions to the unique problems faced in the health care physical environment. Jesse is also a Certified Healthcare Facility Manager. Jesse is now the manager for the Building Services Department at St. Luke’s Meridian Medical Center\, where the nuts and bolts of building operations really matter to the patients he’s working for. He is passionate about elevating the quality of patient care by pursuing better ways to design and manage health care facilities. Jesse and his wife Corey keep busy by raising their three kids\, Arthur (6yo)\, Ed-mund (2yo)\, and Edith newborn). BIM allows the designer to track thousands of building components in 3-D and thus detect potential interferences. It also makes it easy to visually display a potentially complex design in a way that building owners can easily understand. Similarly\, building energy simulation (SIM) has evolved into a powerful tool for evaluating the energy performance of potential or existing buildings. Building simulation allows easy comparison of the energy and environmental performance of many hundreds of design or retrofit options. Because much of the data that building simulation tools require already exists in the BIM models\, it’s critical that simple methods for sharing that data are available. This presentation describes the opportunities and challenges for sharing data between BIM and SIM and demonstrates recent advances in data exchange. About the Speaker: Drury B. Idaho St. Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Boise 12/12/2018 Technical Workshop 9:30-11:30am @ The Idaho Power Building Building Information Modeling (BIM) is one of the most powerful tools that designers have to create and visualize 3-D building models. BIM allows the designer to track thousands of building components in 3-D and thus detect potential interferences. It also makes it easy to visually display a potentially complex design in a way that building owners can easily understand. Similarly\, building energy simulation (SIM) has evolved into a powerful tool for evaluating the energy performance of potential or existing buildings. Building simulation allows easy comparison of the energy and environmental performance of many hundreds of design or retrofit options. Because much of the data that building simulation tools require already exists in the BIM models\, it’s critical that simple methods for sharing that data are available. This presentation describes the opportunities and challenges for sharing data between BIM and SIM and demonstrates recent advances in data exchange. About the Speaker: Drury B. Crawley\, Ph.D. Dru Crawley is Bentley Fellow and Director\, Building Industry Development focusing on building performance\, BIM\, net-zero-energy buildings\, sustainability\, resilience\, and smart cities. Prior to being elevated to Bentley Fellow in 2014\, he led development of Bentley’s suite of building performance software for four years. Before joining Bentley in 2010\, Dr. Crawley developed and managed EnergyPlus and the USDOE’s Commercial Buildings Initiative (now Better Buildings Initiative and Alliances) promoting creation of net-zero-energy buildings. With more than 40 years of experience in buildings energy efficiency\, renewable energy\, and sustainability\, he has worked in engineering software development\, government research and standards development organizations\, as well as building design and consulting companies. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of Strathclyde in Glasgow\, Scotland on the topic of building simulation as a policy tool\, a Bachelor of Architecture from University of Tennessee\, and is a registered architect. Dr. Crawley is active in ASHRAE (Chair of Standard 169 Climatic Data for Building Design Standards\, member of Standards Committee and chair of SPLS\, member of SSPC 189.1 (Standard for the Design of High-Performance\, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings)\, member of SSPC 140 (Standard Method of Test for the Evaluation of Building Energy Analysis Computer Programs)\, former member of the Technical Activities\, Research Administration\, Advocacy\, and Grassroots Government Activities Committees\, and past chair of Technical Committees 2.8\, 4.2\, 4.7\, and 7.1). He was made an ASHRAE Fellow in 2009 and achieved ASHRAE BEMP (Building Energy Modeling Professional) certification in October 2012. Recipient of ASHRAE Exceptional Service Award (2013)\, Service to ASHRAE Research Award (2012)\, Distinguished Service Award (2003)\, and Symposium Best Paper Award (1999) for “Which Weather Data Should You Use for Energy Simulations of Commercial Buildings?” He is also active in the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA at-large board member since 1998\, Fellow in 2012\, Regional Affiliate Liaison since 2006)\, IBPSA-USA (board member since 2013\, vice president since 2017\, treasurer 2013-2017)\, U. S. Green Building Council (USGBC\, past vice chair and member\, Energy & Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group; past member\, Research Committee; past research Liaison)\, the American Institute of Architects (AIA)\, an Affiliate member of CIBSE\, and serves on the editorial boards of three international Journals. This means that the remaining 95% of our commercial buildings are experiencing reduced energy performance each year. This trend in existing buildings can be changed by the implementation of a Technical (testing based) Retro-commissioning (RCx) program that incorporates technical energy audit procedures\, measurements of building performance metrics\, savings calculational procedures and corresponding financial analysis methodologies that building owners can understand and interpret for developing both short term and long term programs for building systems’ upgrades. Case studies are presented for various RCx projects that demonstrate the advantage of conducting a Technical RCx program and the merit of implementing an Ongoing Commissioning (OCx) program for a building owner to be able to maintain a sought level of building performance for an ongoing basis. (9:30am – 10:30am) This presentation integrates the requirements of “The 2030 Challenge” with the methodologies of achieving a Sustainable Future that ASHRAE has developed along with the procedures of the various phases of an effective High Performance Integrated Design program that utilizes a technical commissioning approach to ensure the level of performance that the owner expects. To illustrate the presented design\, construction and performance verification phases for high performance buildings’ projects\, examples of applications that have proven performance levels (3+ years of recorded performance data) will be presented during the program. The materials that will be discussed will be based in part upon ASHRAE’S Advanced Energy Design Guides for 30% and 50% steps toward Net-Zero Energy Buildings. The culmination of the program will be the presentation of various pathways in a prescriptive format of achieving Net-Zero Energy Buildings. Getting From AEDGs to Net-Zero Energy Buildings (10:30am – 11:30am) ASHRAE’s Vision 2020 Producing Net Zero Energy Buildings establishes a time-line to develop the necessary guidance to achieve Net-Zero Energy Buildings by 2020. The basis for this guidance will be the Advanced Energy Design Guides (AEDGs) series as well as publications pertaining to advanced Indoor Environmental Quality and Comfort. Today there are numerous examples of Net-Zero Energy Buildings as demonstrated during ASHRAE’s Net-Zero and Beyond Conference in 2009. This presentation will cover the guidance contained in the existing AEDG documents for different building types and climatic zones\, IEQ design guidance for high performing buildings\, along with examples of buildings that have successfully demonstrated 30%\, 50% and greater savings over the requirements of 90.1 including various Net-Zero Energy facilities. Various levels of “Prescriptive Guidelines” will be provided for all building systems and components along with “Lessons Learned” by the participants who have achieved Net-Zero Energy Buildings.
