Title: Impacts of Climate Change and Urbanization on Future Building Performance With the increasing interest in climate change driven by human activity\, recent research has focused on the impact of climate change or urban heat island on building operation and performance across the world. But this work usually aggregates the energy and peak demand impacts across a broad sector. In a recent study\, impacts on the operating performance of an office building were estimated based on climate change and heat island scenarios in 25 locations (20 climate regions). This presentation presents the variation and differences among the 20 regions when climate change is introduced. The focus is on changes in comfort conditions\, building equipment operation as well as daily patterns of energy performance using prototypical buildings that represent typical\, good\, and low-energy practices around the world. Other issues such as fuel swapping as heating and cooling ratios change\, impacts on environmental emissions\, and how low-energy building design incorporating renewables can significantly mitigate any potential climate variation are also presented. Speaker : Dr. Drury B. Crawley\, Ph. D.\, Director\, Bentley Systems\, Inc. Dru Crawley is Bentley Fellow and Director\, Building Performance Research focusing on building performance\, zero-energy Buildings\, decarbonization\, digital twins\, smart cities\, sustainability\, and resilience. Prior to being elevated to Bentley Fellow in 2014\, he led development of Bentley’s building performance software suite for four years. Before joining Bentley in 2010\, Dr. Crawley developed and managed EnergyPlus and the USDOE’s Commercial Buildings Initiative (now Better Buildings Initiative and Alliances) promoting creation of net-zero-energy buildings. With more than 40 years of experience in buildings energy efficiency\, renewable energy\, and sustainability\, he has worked in engineering software development\, government research and standards development organizations\, as well as building design and consulting companies. He received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University of Strathclyde in Glasgow\, Scotland on the topic of building simulation as a policy tool\, and a Bachelor of Architecture from University of Tennessee\, and is a registered architect. Dr. Crawley is active in ASHRAE (Director-At-Large on ASHRAE Board\, member of Task Force on Building Decarbonization\, Chair of Standard 169 (Climatic Data for Building Design Standards)\, member of SSPC 189.1 (Standard for the Design of High-Performance\, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings)\, as well as a member of Standards PC 105R\, 140\, 205R\, 209R\, 228P\, and 229P. Title: Best Practices for the Application of UV-C for Surface and Air Treatment This presentation briefly describes the history of Germicidal UV-C technology and its ability to inactivate all known microorganisms including viruses\, mold\, bacteria—even drug-resistant superbugs\, while reducing HVAC energy use by up to 25%. We will explore the three primary applications of UV-C for air and HVAC surface protection: 1) HVAC coil/surface irradiation to boost coil-heat-transfer efficiency\, 2) HVAC airstream disinfection to kill airborne pathogens and 3) Upper-Room/Air treatment for infectious diseases. It will also examine the operating conditions that increase or decrease the required minimum UV-C energy in a specific application such as UV-C fixture placement\, air temperature\, air velocity and AHU material reflectivity. Case studies will be presented along with the simple methods used to validate increased HVAC and IAQ performance. Additionally\, current application standards and guidelines within ASHRAE\, IUVA\, IES\, UL and ISO will be discussed. With an urgency to find ways to help mitigate airborne transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus\, ASHRAE took a leadership role by creating it’s Epidemic Task Force\, which quickly produced a helpful serious of guidelines and recommendations for building operators to apply to existing building HVAC systems. At the same time\, a plethora of air cleaning technologies hit the marketplace\, both new and old\, with volume and ferocity as never seen before. With the advent of so many new guidelines and products being introduced as a result of the pandemic\, it is helpful for us to reflect and ask some questions. . What have we learned about the importance of IAQ? Has the pandemic drive the industry to a better understanding of the impac HVAC systems have on IAQ? How effective are filters really? Do higher air change rates make for cleaner indoor spaces? Does sickness really get transmitted through the HVAC system? What should be the balance between optimizing indoor air quality and energy conservation? Is more outside air always better? What air cleaning technologies did the pandemic uncover as viable solutions moving forward? What are the challenges that lie ahead? How does a change in atmospheric CO2 levels impact Demand Control Ventilation strategies? How has the pandemic changed IAQ design & implementation for new buildings? With a hyper focus on IAQ are we at risk of underdeveloping healthy immune systems? Does simply following building codes and ventilation standards adequately accomplish ASHRAE’s vision for “a healthy and sustainable built environment for all?” Many of these questions and possibly questions you have will be discussed by this industry panel. The energy code and it’s value to Idahoans is under great discussion and debate in recent months as the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses has brought all codes under full review in response to the Governor’s Executive Order for Zero-Based Rulemaking. As rulemakers engage with the public through these discussions\, questions arise about what value an energy code\, or specific sections therein\, bring to a state like Idaho and it’s local communities. . Do the measures captured in the energy code actually save building owners money? Are the measures cost-effective? Do energy code measures offer any life safety\, health or environmental quality benefits? Are energy code measures enforceable? Does the energy code pose an undue burden on those financing building construction? Does the energy code benefit any stakeholders in a uniquely positive way? How does the energy code or lack of one impact the local electric utility demand and associated payer rates? Can the energy code be feasibly diced up into sections or individual measures such that there is a middle ground between retaining the full energy code and eliminating it all together? Christopher “Chris” Mathis has spent the past 30 years focusing on how buildings and building products perform – from energy efficiency to code compliance to sustainability and long-term performance durability. Chris received his undergraduate degree in Physics from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. He received a Master of Science in Architecture Studies from MIT where his graduate work focused on energy use in buildings. He has served as a Scientist in the Insulation Technology Laboratory at the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Technical Center\, was the Director of the Thermal Testing Laboratory for the National Association of Home Builders Research Center\, and Director of Marketing for Architectural Testing\, Inc.\, a private laboratory specializing in the performance of buildings and building products\, particularly fenestration performance testing. Topic – Building Science Lessons From the Honey Bee Description – This informative and entertaining presentation is based on an ASHRAE published paper addressing lessons we might learn from the 90 million years of evolution and building science embodied in the work and structures of the honey bee. From temperature management\, thermal storage\, indoor air quality\, active and passive ventilation techniques and energy efficiency\, the honey bee has developed a highly efficient construction system to support its biological needs. Front Street Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Description: : Throughout the world governments instituted a variety of measures to try to curb the spread of COVID-19 and improve public health. In the UK that took the shape of a nationwide lockdown as of the 23 rd of March 2020. This mandate continued until the 13 th of June. These restrictions led to atypical patterns of home occupancy\, the implications of which are still unknown. The work shown in this presentation took advantage of an existing IAQ and window operation monitoring study taking place in east London\, UK. One-year’s worth of monitored data on indoor and outdoor environment parameters along with occupant use of windows was used to analyse the impact of lockdown on IAQ and infer probabilistic models of window operation behaviour. Moreover\, using on-site CO 2 data\, monitored occupancy and operation of windows\, the team calibrated a thermal performance model of one of the spaces to investigate the implications of alternative ventilation strategies. The use of this type of model\, one in which energy\, thermal\, and air quality performance is integrated has great potential to be used to better understand how changes in our built environment impact health\, and at what cost. Fire continues to rage worldwide\, drought and floods are the new normal and\, human populations are growing at an exponential pace. In fact\, over the next two decades\, the world will add another couple of billion people and\, guess where the population will move? To cities and suburbs of course. Whether engineers or architects\, you have chosen the right field if you plan to keep busy. The need for design isn’t going away. But\, the type of design should be evolving. There has been much talk and\, I think\, little action toward making our built environment\, our communities\, resilient. Well\, now is the time for those of us that have design and construction responsibility to step up. Resiliency isn’t just another fad\, it’s one of the most necessary design elements needed. DESCRIPTION:Location: Online Meeting ID \nShare Meeting Topic: Variable Primary Flow (VPF) Systems Classification: Intermediate When we consider a chilled water system configuration\, such as VPF\, it is beneficial to examine and compare the new system with conventional systems. While VPF systems have now been in use for over 20 years\, the system still must be designed and operated properly to provide the expected benefits to the building owner. This presentation covers: A brief overview of primary-secondary systems\, and a comparison with VPF Why are people considering VPF today\, when it was not allowed in the past? Challenges associated with varying water flow through the chiller’s evaporator Plant sequencing\, and various chilled water plant configurations that might be considered Control\, specification and operating issues And even systems that should not be considered for VPF design. Speaker: Mick Schwedler\, PE\, FASHRAE\, LEED ® AP BD+C Mick has been involved in the development and support of HVAC systems for Trane since 1982. As an applications engineer his areas of expertise include system optimization (in which he holds patents) and chilled water and water source heat pump system design. Mick serves as a President Elect on the ASHRAE Board of Directors and is an ASHRAE Fellow\, recipient of ASHRAE’s Exceptional Service\, Distinguished Service\, and Standards Achievement Awards\, and was Chair of SSPC 90.1-2010 (if you have any comments about that!). Mick also served as Chair of the Advanced Energy Design Guide Steering Committee and on project committees for the 50% Hospital and Office Buildings AEDGs. He is Past President of the La Crosse Area ASHRAE Chapter and presently misses serving on Technical Committees. Moving beyond energy to an environmental perspective\, Mick Chaired the LEED Technical Committee and served on the LEED Steering Committee. He is also a past member of several USGBC technical and educations groups\, authored portions of the original ASHRAE GreenGuide and served on technical groups for the New Buildings Institute. Mick and Jen have three children — Ben (married to Mandi with grandson Ian)\, Caroline (married to Aaron with grandson James)\, and Karl — that are all blessings to them. Their family is quite active at First Evangelical Lutheran Church where Jen is an organist. Mick sings in barbershop quartets whenever possible\, and golfs when work and volunteer activities allow. Morality is a personal view of what is “right or wrong”\, “good or bad about a topic or issue while the ethics of the subject reflect the collective wisdom of a group. The ethics of ASHRAE\, therefore\, reflect the collective wisdom of ASHRAE members. This lecture looks at the use and effectiveness of the ASHRAE Code of Ethics Speaker: T. David Underwood\, P.Eng.\, lives in Oakville\, Ontario\, Canada He represented ORAC and HRAI on the Canadian Standards Association B52 committee on Mechanical Refrigeration\, the advisory committee that assisted the Ontario government in developing refrigeration regulations. He coauthored a trade refrigeration safety manual and served on the Refrigeration trade advisory committee for the refrigeration trade in Ontario. When David was a member of a Canadian Model National Building Code\, advisory committee\, he participated in writing the Building Science and Plumbing section of the 2015 edition of the code. As the 2015-2016 ASHRAE president \, David Underwood was a member of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. He is an ASHRAE Fellow\, ASHRAE Life Member. He previously served on the Board as president –elect\, treasurer\, two terms as a vice president and as a director-at-large. He holds the ASHRAE Exceptional Service Award\, Distinguished Service Award and the William J. Collins Research Promotion Award. He is an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer\, a member of Technical Committee 7.2\, HVAC&R Construction & Design Build Technologies\, and a member of the Building Performance Alliance Ad Hoc Committee. Underwood was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Manitoba. Immediately after graduation\, he entered the HVAC&R industry and was employed by a major products manufacturer for approximately 10 years. Zentz\, Associate Professor\, is in the HVACR Programs within the College of Engineering Technology at Ferris State University and past HVAC Program Coordinator. He received his Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Purdue University in 1980 and his Master degree in Career and Technical Education from Ferris State University in 2007. He is a past President of West Michigan ASHRAE\, a past RVC of Student Activities for Region V\, past Chair for Student Activities within ASHRAE\, and past Regional Members Council Representative for Region V. He is currently the Director and Regional Chair for Region V of ASHRAE. He has been a DL (Distinguished Lecturer) for ASHRAE since 2012 and has eight (8) approved topics. In the field of HVACR\, his background includes professional engineering sales for the Trane Company\, manager of engineering-design-build for W.J. O’Neil Company in Detroit\, and vice-president of engineering for EPPA-Strand Custom Air Handling in Detroit. This experience started in 1980 and continued until his transformation into teaching at Ferris State University in 2003. In the area of teaching\, he has taught junior and senior level HVAC Design (primary and secondary systems)\, Primary Equipment Selection\, Commercial Building Heat Gain/ Heat and the senior Capstone Experience. His teaching experiences includes development of new curriculum (both in the traditional classroom and fully on-line) and teaching fully on-line courses for over 10 years. He has mentored eight (8) different student groups which have received either a First\, Second\, or Third place recognition from ASHRAE in the Student Design Competition. He serves on many educational committees and was a member of Fluke Instrument’s Advisory Board on IAQ. In the area of professional speaking\, he has been the guest speaker at 70 events since 2005. The examples illustrated will include a common heating and ventilation unit with humidification\, a 100% outside air unit used in process cooling applications where supply air temperature and absolute humidity are critical\, a common VAV air handling unit with mixed return/outside air which must supply cooled air to satisfy a specific space Sensible Heat Ratio\, and a more complex Dual Duct system where final supply air out of a diffuser can be calculated/illustrated through Psychrometrics (this example illustrates problem solving and integrates heat transfer equations of fluids). Speaker: Randy Drake\, PE Randy Drake graduated from Oregon State University in 1979 with a degree in mechanical engineering and four years later received his Idaho professional license. He worked in the mechanical Contracting industry for 33 years as an Engineer\, project manager and estimator. During his time as a Contractor he managed many steam system installations such as St. Luke’s central steam plant\, Holy Rosary hospital’s central steam plant in Ontario\, Oregon\, Glanbia’s milk protean plan Richfield\, Idaho steam plant\, Idaho Milk Product’s CIP condensate return system and approximately 18 steam boiler replacements for the Boise Independent School District. As building owners\, facility managers\, consulting engineers\, contractors and others look to find feasible IAQ solutions for occupied indoor spaces\, one of the technologies that has risen to the forefront is called Needle-Point Bipolar Ionization (NPBI). We will discuss what this technology is (and what it isn’t) along with best practices for how NPBI can be implemented as a complimentary measure toward IAQ improvement for any facility with any HVAC system. While NPBI continues to gain much notoriety as a result of its tested ability to deactivate SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19 virus)\, we’ll also discuss the long-lasting benefits which include the ability to control mold\, odors\, smoke\, VOCs\, airborne particulate\, allergens and even bacteria growth on cooling coils. About the Speakers David Schurk\, PE\, Global Plasma Solutions\, Director of Business Development David is a Licensed Designer of Engineering Systems with over 38-years of experience in the design and analysis of heating\, ventilating\, and air-conditioning systems for a variety of market sectors\, with a special focus on hospital/healthcare environmental control and indoor air quality.
