Idaho St. Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Title: Construction Safety – Some theory\, some practical ideas Description Managing construction safety is necessary in both large and small projects – most notably due to the OSHA position on multiemployer worksites which encourages citations for all parties potentially involved in serious injuries. This includes the host employer\, general contractor\, and subcontractors. The main goal of construction safety management is to reduce and control\, to a defendable degree\, the risks for serious injuries and fatalities during the construction project. This discussion will explore the tensions that exist between the host employer and contractors and explore practical ideas to minimize risks while maintaining schedule and costs. Presenter: Mike Cooper Mike earned his BS in Chemistry at UC Berkeley and masters in Public Health and masters in Chemistry from San Jose State University. He began his career working in the aerospace industry as an analytical chemist. Following certification in industrial hygiene\, Mike has developed and directed Environmental\, Safety\, and Health programs within the semiconductor\, medical device\, grocery\, oil and gas\, pharmaceutical\, and foundry industries both with the US and abroad. Mike serves on an OSHA health expert advisory committee to review and propose permissible exposure limits for regulatory enforcement and teaches in occupational safety and health management and industrial hygiene. DESCRIPTION:Location: U of I Water Center Building 322 E. Front Street Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Title: Maximizing HVAC Efficiency\, Flexibility and Resiliency with High Efficiency Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems With the ever-increasing environmental impacts of local pollution\, extreme weather events and wildfires\, there is a necessity for resilient\, flexible\, and extremely efficient HVAC systems. Unfortunately\, while HVAC systems are critical to our comfort and well-being\, conventional systems are costly to operate and contribute to over 50% of total energy usage in commercial buildings. Dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS) are a proven solution for reducing energy consumption since they optimize the control and functionality of ventilation and thermal comfort separately. A very high efficiency approach to DOAS maximizes energy efficiency by decoupling ventilation air from comfort conditioning\, including air-to-air heat recovery\, right-sizing of a high efficiency heating and cooling system and minimizing fan power. This allows for many benefits\, including: Demonstrated reduction of building HVAC energy use by an average of 69% over conventional systems. Excellent indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort. Proven flexibility and resiliency to adapt to changing occupant densities\, increased IAQ requirements\, and extreme weather events Significant carbon emission reduction with minimal peak electric demand increases in sites that convert from gas to electric heat. In partnership with local utilities and HVAC experts\, this system approach has been installed and monitored in 12 small-to-medium commercial buildings\, including in cold climates\, that resulted in an average 69% reduction in HVAC energy use and a 48% reduction in whole-building energy use when compared to a code minimum system (often a packaged RTU). Attendees will learn the cost and energy savings outcomes of these Northwest-based projects. Speaker: Jordan Pratt Jordan is a Mechanical Engineer with a passion for energy efficiency. He manages a wide range of emerging technology field tests and market transformation efforts for the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance (NEEA). Jordan has experience analyzing complex mechanical systems as well as installing\, commissioning\, and testing a variety of equipment and systems. He is an expert in long-term data collection and leveraging data visualization tools to communicate important insights from large\, complex data sets. Topic Descriptions: Psyched for Psychrometrics Psychrometrics is an important and powerful tool for HVAC design and problem solving. Unfortunately\, its intimidating appearance can deter use. This presentation begins with an introduction to the psychrometric chart for those that are new to it or need a quick review but quickly moves into how to apply this tool for better design decisions and to solve problems with system operation. Specific areas addressed include – system capacity\, part loads\, energy recovery\, and condensation. ASHRAE's Impact in the Industry – Past\, Present\, and Future 2019-2020 is ASHRAE's 125th Anniversary. This presentation provides a summary of ASHRAE’s history and reviews the many areas in which ASHRAE has had an impact. It also presents the current direction of ASHRAE as it evolves to meet the needs of its members and industry. The objectives of the organization in the near future as a result of the new strategic plan are introduced. This presentation will also discuss some of the opportunities being explored as ASHRAE considers its role as a future industry leader. As history shows\, there is a need for continual improvement and change to remain relevant and maintain a prominent position within the industry. Ethical Decision Making – An Exercise in Application In lieu of the traditional lecture style presentation\, this is a structured interactive exercise. The participant will be provided a copy of both the ASHRAE and the Professional Engineering Code of Ethics. A methodology for ethical decision making will be introduced. Realistic ethical dilemmas from the practice of building design and construction will be presented. Based on the information provided and using the provided Codes of Ethics the participants will be asked to make their own decision\, discuss this with their table\, and then be lead through the decision making process as a group. The ethical dilemmas begin as fairly simple black-white analysis and are progressively made more complex during the session. Speaker Description: Julia Keen is a Professor of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science at Kansas State University holding the Bob and Betty Tointon Engineering endowed chair. She also owns her own consulting company\, Keen Designs\, PA. Her specific areas of interest include HVAC design\, energy codes\, high performance design\, HVAC education\, and the advancement of women in the building design and construction industry. Julia Keen received her Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Engineering from Kansas State University. Upon graduation\, she worked as a Mechanical/Electrical Project Engineer in Waterloo\, Iowa. In this capacity she was responsible for the design of building systems from initial planning stages through final project inspection and completion. In July 2003\, Julia accepted a faculty position with K-State in the Architectural Engineering and Construction Science Department. Title: Impacts of Climate Change and Urbanization on Future Building Performance With the increasing interest in climate change driven by human activity\, recent research has focused on the impact of climate change or urban heat island on building operation and performance across the world. But this work usually aggregates the energy and peak demand impacts across a broad sector. In a recent study\, impacts on the operating performance of an office building were estimated based on climate change and heat island scenarios in 25 locations (20 climate regions). This presentation presents the variation and differences among the 20 regions when climate change is introduced. The focus is on changes in comfort conditions\, building equipment operation as well as daily patterns of energy performance using prototypical buildings that represent typical\, good\, and low-energy practices around the world. Other issues such as fuel swapping as heating and cooling ratios change\, impacts on environmental emissions\, and how low-energy building design incorporating renewables can significantly mitigate any potential climate variation are also presented. Speaker : Dr. Drury B. Crawley\, Ph. D.\, Director\, Bentley Systems\, Inc. Dru Crawley is Bentley Fellow and Director\, Building Performance Research focusing on building performance\, zero-energy Buildings\, decarbonization\, digital twins\, smart cities\, sustainability\, and resilience. Prior to being elevated to Bentley Fellow in 2014\, he led development of Bentley’s building performance software suite for four years. Before joining Bentley in 2010\, Dr. Crawley developed and managed EnergyPlus and the USDOE’s Commercial Buildings Initiative (now Better Buildings Initiative and Alliances) promoting creation of net-zero-energy buildings. With more than 40 years of experience in buildings energy efficiency\, renewable energy\, and sustainability\, he has worked in engineering software development\, government research and standards development organizations\, as well as building design and consulting companies. Title: Best Practices for the Application of UV-C for Surface and Air Treatment This presentation briefly describes the history of Germicidal UV-C technology and its ability to inactivate all known microorganisms including viruses\, mold\, bacteria—even drug-resistant superbugs\, while reducing HVAC energy use by up to 25%. We will explore the three primary applications of UV-C for air and HVAC surface protection: 1) HVAC coil/surface irradiation to boost coil-heat-transfer efficiency\, 2) HVAC airstream disinfection to kill airborne pathogens and 3) Upper-Room/Air treatment for infectious diseases. It will also examine the operating conditions that increase or decrease the required minimum UV-C energy in a specific application such as UV-C fixture placement\, air temperature\, air velocity and AHU material reflectivity. With the advent of so many new guidelines and products being introduced as a result of the pandemic\, it is helpful for us to reflect and ask some questions. . What have we learned about the importance of IAQ? Has the pandemic drive the industry to a better understanding of the impac HVAC systems have on IAQ? How effective are filters really? Do higher air change rates make for cleaner indoor spaces? Does sickness really get transmitted through the HVAC system? What should be the balance between optimizing indoor air quality and energy conservation? Is more outside air always better? What air cleaning technologies did the pandemic uncover as viable solutions moving forward? What are the challenges that lie ahead? How does a change in atmospheric CO2 levels impact Demand Control Ventilation strategies? How has the pandemic changed IAQ design & implementation for new buildings? With a hyper focus on IAQ are we at risk of underdeveloping healthy immune systems? He has served as a Scientist in the Insulation Technology Laboratory at the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Technical Center\, was the Director of the Thermal Testing Laboratory for the National Association of Home Builders Research Center\, and Director of Marketing for Architectural Testing\, Inc.\, a private laboratory specializing in the performance of buildings and building products\, particularly fenestration performance testing. Topic – Building Science Lessons From the Honey Bee Description – This informative and entertaining presentation is based on an ASHRAE published paper addressing lessons we might learn from the 90 million years of evolution and building science embodied in the work and structures of the honey bee. From temperature management\, thermal storage\, indoor air quality\, active and passive ventilation techniques and energy efficiency\, the honey bee has developed a highly efficient construction system to support its biological needs. Front Street Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Description: : Throughout the world governments instituted a variety of measures to try to curb the spread of COVID-19 and improve public health. In the UK that took the shape of a nationwide lockdown as of the 23 rd of March 2020. This mandate continued until the 13 th of June. These restrictions led to atypical patterns of home occupancy\, the implications of which are still unknown. The work shown in this presentation took advantage of an existing IAQ and window operation monitoring study taking place in east London\, UK. One-year’s worth of monitored data on indoor and outdoor environment parameters along with occupant use of windows was used to analyse the impact of lockdown on IAQ and infer probabilistic models of window operation behaviour. Moreover\, using on-site CO 2 data\, monitored occupancy and operation of windows\, the team calibrated a thermal performance model of one of the spaces to investigate the implications of alternative ventilation strategies. The use of this type of model\, one in which energy\, thermal\, and air quality performance is integrated has great potential to be used to better understand how changes in our built environment impact health\, and at what cost. Fire continues to rage worldwide\, drought and floods are the new normal and\, human populations are growing at an exponential pace. In fact\, over the next two decades\, the world will add another couple of billion people and\, guess where the population will move? To cities and suburbs of course. Whether engineers or architects\, you have chosen the right field if you plan to keep busy. The need for design isn’t going away. But\, the type of design should be evolving. There has been much talk and\, I think\, little action toward making our built environment\, our communities\, resilient. Well\, now is the time for those of us that have design and construction responsibility to step up. Resiliency isn’t just another fad\, it’s one of the most necessary design elements needed.
