Lindsay is the Business Development Leader for Trane Technologies’ Thermal Energy Storage systems. He has been involved in thermal energy storage research\, engineering\, sales\, and operation for over 30 years. Bruce received his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University. He received a Master of Science in Energy Resources at the University of Pittsburgh\, where he taught graduate engineering courses. He received a Master of Management from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. Bruce began his energy career at Peoples Natural Gas in Pittsburgh in industrial sales\, conducting energy audits in Western Pennsylvania. He underwent special industry training and received a Chartered Industrial Gas Consultant designation. He was recruited by the Gas Research Institute to conduct national programs to develop new natural gas-fueled cooling and heating systems. Description: “Electrification” has recently become a widely accepted roadmap towards the goal of a low-carbon future. The concept is easily understood in the transportation sector: cars using fossil fuels as their on-board energy source can never be carbon free. However\, an electric car that is charged by a carbon free source\, can be carbon free. When applied to buildings\, one method is to envision stopping the flow of fossil fuels to them and having all energy come from the carbon-free grid of the future. Some skeptics of the concept believe it is a pipe dream to have a carbon-free electric grid but certainly you cannot have a carbon-free building if you are burning fossil fuels in them. Electrification will play a part in our low carbon future so understanding heat pumps\, “free cooling” and thermal energy storage’s relationship to them\, will be critical. The presentation will cover the multiple value streams of using thermal storage for heating and cooling in an all-electric building. Workshop Title: Moving Closer to Net Zero Buildings with the IAQ Procedure of ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2022 Speaker: Chris Muller Bio: Recognized as a world-wide authority on the topics of indoor/environmental air quality\, the application and use of gas-phase air filtration\, filtration and enhanced air cleaning\, corrosion control and monitoring\, and electronic equipment reliability. Written and spoken extensively on these and related topics with more than 175 articles and peer-reviewed papers\, more than 100 seminars\, and 8 handbooks. Contributed to chapters in two handbooks on the application and use of gas-phase air filtration\, wrote the chapter on contamination control in the ASHRAE Datacom Series Handbook – Particulate and Gaseous Contamination in Datacom Environments\, wrote a chapter on gas-phase air filtration in the NAFA Air Filtration Handbook\, a chapter on airborne molecular contamination in the Semiconductor Manufacturing Handbook\, 2nd Ed. published by McGraw-Hill\, and on Contamination Control in the upcoming Data Center Handbook edited by Hwaiyu Geng. Workshop Description: Being able to achieve IAQ goals while reducing energy consumption is one of the more valuable aspects of using ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2016: "Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality". By meeting the requirements of the IAQ Procedure\, one is allowed to take credit for the application of validated air cleaning technologies and reduce the amount of ventilation air that has to be heated and/or cooled. Revisions to Standard 62.1 have caused some confusion in its use and the application of energy conservation measures. This presentation will discuss the status of the Indoor Air Quality Procedure\, review the applicable provisions of the Standard\, discuss indoor air quality models in use\, and provide examples where the IAQ Procedure has been successfully employed as part of an energy conservation program. There will also be a discussion of current activities to make it easier to validate the IAQ Procedure and make it more useful to the engineering community when designing "net zero" energy buildings. Although microgrids are interconnected to larger utility networks\, they are capable of disconnecting and operating independently; thereby\, offering the potential to increase resiliency. Because the generation of electricity needs to constantly balance the demand\, some form of energy storage is important to maximize the potential benefits of microgrids. This presentation will discuss how thermal energy storage is a strategic technology to incorporate into microgrids and how thermal storage can actually increase the proportion of electricity generated by renewable energy to further increase reliability. Presenter: Douglas Reindl is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition\, he is the founding director of the Industrial Refrigeration Consortium (IRC) at UW-Madison. Professor Reindl has taught at all levels: undergraduate\, graduate\, and continuing professional development. Professor Reindl has developed an internationally recognized series of professional development courses focused on industrial refrigeration systems with an emphasis on the safe use of ammonia as a refrigerant. Title – Fully Leveraging Your Energy Model – A Field Guide Description – An energy model is neither a Revit button nor a “one-and-done” design activity. Rather\, energy models allow designers to go beyond aesthetics and see options through the lens of energy performance. The speaker identifies four phases where models improve energy performance and provide compelling evidence that energy models quantify performance of ideas that designers are interested in exploring. The speaker presents a scalable energy model workflow\, and even share insights where models pay for themselves\, including changes to the 179D energy efficiency tax deduction enabled by the Inflation Reduction Act. Leveraging valuable energy models throughout design helps architects achieve both aesthetic design goals AND ambitious energy performance targets. Learning Outcomes: 1. Appraise their firm’s approach and process to include an energy model as part of the design process. 2. Assess proven data that demonstrates that an early-phase energy model improves outcomes throughout the design process\, leading to enhanced energy performance. 3. Apply concepts and analytical insights so their firm leverages energy models throughout design to improve both aesthetics and energy performance. 4. Bio – Amanda Bogner is passionate about architecture and sustainability; she lives and breathes energy savings and provides clients with meaningful energy modeling analysis. Speaker: Keilly Witman Keilly Witman is the Department Lead of the Refrigerant Management Solutions Group at DC Engineering. She works to help refrigerant end-users transition to environmentally friendlier refrigerants\, implement best practices to reduce refrigerant emissions across their facilities\, and comply with the increasing number of refrigerant regulations in the US. Keilly has held over 100 webinars on refrigerant management and co-authored best practice guidelines for refrigerant leak prevention and repair\, installation leak tightness\, and R-22 retrofits. Keilly began her career at the US EPA\, where she launched the GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership\, a first-of-its-kind partnership with retailers to transition to environmentally-friendlier refrigerants\, reduce their refrigerant leaks\, and save money. During her tenure the partnership grew to include over 12\,000 supermarkets nationwide. She was named by Supermarket News as one of the 50 Most Influential People in the Supermarket Industry in 2010. Topic Description: Morning Session 1: Monitoring Based Commissioning and Fault Detection Diagnostics: Using Big Data and Engineering to Improve Facility Performance Buildings are using way more data points for their operation\, beyond the HVAC systems BAS\, to be able to measure and verify that they are operating within energy and comfort parameters. The use of Monitoring Based Cx (MBCx) or Fault Detection Diagnostics (FDD) for ongoing commissioning can help keep the systems in line for energy use as well as maintaining a high level of IEQ. These processes can also be used for improving the existing buildings in an owner’s portfolio. Learn how to use MBCx and FDD\, in your designs\, construction\, commissioning\, and retro-commissioning of the built environment. Morning Session 2: Weighing the Pig vs. Making it Fly: Improve Energy Performance while Maintaining IEQ through Retro-Commissioning A lot of existing building stock needs to have its energy\, and thereby operational carbon\, improved if we are to meet the challenges for net-zero energy or carbon-neutrality in the next few decades. The improvement of the existing building stock\, which is often looked at as energy hogs\, can be greatly improved through the retro-commissioning process. This session covers the stages of weighing the pig (benchmarking) versus actively making improvements for systems. Actual projects for laboratories\, hospitality and gaming\, and university facilities will be used to demonstrate how to use retro-commissioning to make your pig fly. Lunch Meeting: ASHRAE Standard 241-Control of Infectious Aerosols ASHRAE\, through its Epidemic Task Force\, provided timely leadership in responding to the COVID19 pandemic from March 2020 through June 2022. At the request of the White House\, ASHRAE undertook its own project Warp Speed to build on that expertise for the future. In December 2022\, the ASHRAE Board committed to quickly writing a standard to make buildings more resilient against infectious aerosols ahead of the next epidemic. In only four months the project committee created and won approval for ASHRAE Standard 241-2023. Idaho St. Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Title: Construction Safety – Some theory\, some practical ideas Description Managing construction safety is necessary in both large and small projects – most notably due to the OSHA position on multiemployer worksites which encourages citations for all parties potentially involved in serious injuries. This includes the host employer\, general contractor\, and subcontractors. The main goal of construction safety management is to reduce and control\, to a defendable degree\, the risks for serious injuries and fatalities during the construction project. This discussion will explore the tensions that exist between the host employer and contractors and explore practical ideas to minimize risks while maintaining schedule and costs. Presenter: Mike Cooper Mike earned his BS in Chemistry at UC Berkeley and masters in Public Health and masters in Chemistry from San Jose State University. He began his career working in the aerospace industry as an analytical chemist. Following certification in industrial hygiene\, Mike has developed and directed Environmental\, Safety\, and Health programs within the semiconductor\, medical device\, grocery\, oil and gas\, pharmaceutical\, and foundry industries both with the US and abroad. Front Street Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Title: Maximizing HVAC Efficiency\, Flexibility and Resiliency with High Efficiency Dedicated Outdoor Air Systems With the ever-increasing environmental impacts of local pollution\, extreme weather events and wildfires\, there is a necessity for resilient\, flexible\, and extremely efficient HVAC systems. Unfortunately\, while HVAC systems are critical to our comfort and well-being\, conventional systems are costly to operate and contribute to over 50% of total energy usage in commercial buildings. Dedicated outdoor air systems (DOAS) are a proven solution for reducing energy consumption since they optimize the control and functionality of ventilation and thermal comfort separately. A very high efficiency approach to DOAS maximizes energy efficiency by decoupling ventilation air from comfort conditioning\, including air-to-air heat recovery\, right-sizing of a high efficiency heating and cooling system and minimizing fan power. This allows for many benefits\, including: Demonstrated reduction of building HVAC energy use by an average of 69% over conventional systems. Excellent indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort. Proven flexibility and resiliency to adapt to changing occupant densities\, increased IAQ requirements\, and extreme weather events Significant carbon emission reduction with minimal peak electric demand increases in sites that convert from gas to electric heat. In partnership with local utilities and HVAC experts\, this system approach has been installed and monitored in 12 small-to-medium commercial buildings\, including in cold climates\, that resulted in an average 69% reduction in HVAC energy use and a 48% reduction in whole-building energy use when compared to a code minimum system (often a packaged RTU). Topic Descriptions: Psyched for Psychrometrics Psychrometrics is an important and powerful tool for HVAC design and problem solving. Unfortunately\, its intimidating appearance can deter use. This presentation begins with an introduction to the psychrometric chart for those that are new to it or need a quick review but quickly moves into how to apply this tool for better design decisions and to solve problems with system operation. Specific areas addressed include – system capacity\, part loads\, energy recovery\, and condensation. ASHRAE's Impact in the Industry – Past\, Present\, and Future 2019-2020 is ASHRAE's 125th Anniversary. This presentation provides a summary of ASHRAE’s history and reviews the many areas in which ASHRAE has had an impact. It also presents the current direction of ASHRAE as it evolves to meet the needs of its members and industry. The objectives of the organization in the near future as a result of the new strategic plan are introduced. This presentation will also discuss some of the opportunities being explored as ASHRAE considers its role as a future industry leader. As history shows\, there is a need for continual improvement and change to remain relevant and maintain a prominent position within the industry. Ethical Decision Making – An Exercise in Application In lieu of the traditional lecture style presentation\, this is a structured interactive exercise. The participant will be provided a copy of both the ASHRAE and the Professional Engineering Code of Ethics. A methodology for ethical decision making will be introduced. Realistic ethical dilemmas from the practice of building design and construction will be presented. Based on the information provided and using the provided Codes of Ethics the participants will be asked to make their own decision\, discuss this with their table\, and then be lead through the decision making process as a group. The ethical dilemmas begin as fairly simple black-white analysis and are progressively made more complex during the session. Speaker Description: Julia Keen is a Professor of Architectural Engineering and Construction Science at Kansas State University holding the Bob and Betty Tointon Engineering endowed chair. She also owns her own consulting company\, Keen Designs\, PA. Her specific areas of interest include HVAC design\, energy codes\, high performance design\, HVAC education\, and the advancement of women in the building design and construction industry. Julia Keen received her Bachelor’s Degree in Architectural Engineering from Kansas State University. Upon graduation\, she worked as a Mechanical/Electrical Project Engineer in Waterloo\, Iowa. In this capacity she was responsible for the design of building systems from initial planning stages through final project inspection and completion. In July 2003\, Julia accepted a faculty position with K-State in the Architectural Engineering and Construction Science Department.
