DESCRIPTION:Location: U of I Water Center Building 322 E. Front Street Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Title: Creating an Underground Research Facility to Explore the Universe Speaker: Darryl K. Boyce\, P.Eng.\, Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE\, was the ASHRAE President for the 2019-2020 term. Boyce has previously served on the board of directors as treasurer\, vice president\, Director and Regional Chair Region 2 and director-at-large. Boyce is retired and was previously special advisor to the vice-president (Finance and Administration) – and the assistant vice president of facilities management and planning – at Carleton University in Ottawa\, Ontario. Throughout his time spent with ASHRAE and in the HVAC industry\, Boyce has worked on various projects to increase energy efficiency. His most recent projects include the SNOLAB project in Sudbury\, Ontario\, where he is responsible for the design and construction of a world class research facility for underground science. Boyce is a 1982 graduate of the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and earned his Engineering Diploma from the British Columbia Institute of Technology in 1973. Description: The presentation will review the research requirements and describe how these were translated into the design scope for the facility to be located 6\,800 feet below ground level. We will walk through the construction challenges and review the strategies to keep this specialized facility on budget in a challenging underground construction environment. Designing for commissioning and operation will be discussed as well as the commissioning requirements. The program provides an overview of how to use computer assisted building performance analysis systems and ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G to maximize the design team’s ability to achieve the greatest number of credits when seeking project certification under a building performed rating system. Speaker Bio: M. Dennis Knight joined ASHRAE in 1979 and has been working in the building design\, construction\, and operations industry since 1974. He served as ASHRAE President for the 2024-25 society year. He provides engineering\, design\, and construction-related services within the building industry. Before his presidential year\, Mr. Knight served as a Director at Large\, Vice President\, Treasurer\, and President-Elect on the ASHRAE Board of Directors\, and holds the membership grades of ASHRAE Fellow and Presidential Member. Active at the local\, state\, and national levels with various agencies and professional societies\, he works to help develop sustainable\, integrated building design guidelines and standards. Nationally\, as a member of ASHRAE\, Mr. Knight is a member and former chair of Standards Committee SPC 224 – "The Application of Building Information Modeling"\, is the former Chair of Technical Committee (TC) 7.1 "Integrated Building Design\," and served as chair of the ASHRAE Building Performance Analysis Specialty Conference for six years. He currently serves on the ASHRAE Government Affairs Committee and the Development Committee and is the ASHRAE liaison to the National Institute of Building Sciences' BIM Council. With more than 40 years of experience\, he previously led the development of EnergyPlus and the U.S. DOE’s Commercial Buildings Initiative\, has authored over 125 publications\, and is internationally recognized for his leadership in ASHRAE\, IBPSA\, and advancing energy-efficient\, high-performance buildings. Dr. Crawley holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee\, is a registered architect\, an ASHRAE Fellow\, and a recipient of numerous industry awards for his contributions to building energy modeling\, standards development\, and sustainability. Title: Big\, Smart\, and Everything: Data\, Technology\, Buildings\, Cities\, and the IoT Description: There is a transformation under way in the world that will fundamentally change how we interact with our technology\, buildings and cities. Big data allows us to find trends and causes not clear from our limited data today. This presentation describes the basics of big data\, IoT\, and Smart everything and its applications and promise in buildings. Title: Introduction to Building Decarbonization Description: This presentation describes the basics of building decarbonization are presented including building carbon dioxide and other emissions\, key drivers for decarbonization\, how carbon impact is measured\, and the accepted international standards for defining carbon life-cycle calculations. The key decarbonization methods are then described including offset strategies\, electrification technology applications\, and ways they can be implemented in the building sector. Finally\, the efforts that ASHRAE already has under way to provide relevant information about decarbonization to the membership\, and to embed decarbonization in our standards and guidelines.
