Graef received her bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Florida. DESCRIPTION:Location: Idaho Water Center – Legacy Pointe 322 East Front Street Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Title: Energy Efficient Design Ideas for Multifamily Speaker: Dr. Damon Woods is a licensed mechanical engineer who started working at the IDL as a graduate student back in 2013. His dissertation used energy models paired with weather forecasts to predict how a radiant slab should be managed to maximize occupant comfort. His current research focus is on the integration of surface temperatures into building energy management systems. Dr. Woods has taught courses in advanced thermodynamics and energy modeling. In the office\, he spends his time working on energy models and estimating savings from energy upgrades; out of the office he is usually fly fishing or gardening. Dr. Woods earned his B.S. from Montana State University\, his M.S. from Boise State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Idaho. Description: This session will cover the most cost-effective strategies engineers can use to minimize energy use when designing a new multifamily or mixed-use project. The speaker will provide data on the major energy uses in multifamily buildings in Idaho and how to estimate annual utility bills for the tenants (including Idaho Power’s new multifamily rebate program). This presentation will include new and existing code requirements around ventilation and noise transmission. For example\, you cannot just ventilate corridors and use door gaps to pull air into apartments. There will be a few case studies presented and information from ASHRAE’s Advanced Energy Design Guide to hopefully inspire your creativity when it comes to your next multifamily design. Some of the technologies covered include working with architects to meet high-performance insulation and air tightness metrics\, efficient ventilation options\, and load sizing strategies. The focus will be on design approaches tailored to the southern Idaho and eastern Oregon climate. The collaborative and communicative nature of agile energy modeling needs a scalable infrastructure that can support building model management\, analysis as well as delivery of modeling outcomes with software tools and infrastructure solutions. This presentation will introduce the concepts\, best practices and evolving workflows that help automate the energy model creation from BIM for early design analysis to detailed design. Bio: Krishnan Gowri\, Energy Solutions Krishnan Gowri has more than thirty years of experience in the construction industry as a building science and building performance expert. Krishnan received his undergraduate degree in Civil and Structural engineering from Annamalai University in India and obtained his Masters and Doctoral degrees in Building Engineering from Center for Building Studies at Concordia University\, Montreal\, Que. He is a student of Dr. Paul Fazio\, founding Director of Center for Building Studies. As a graduate student\, Krishnan conducted research in integrated building design and advanced computer applications for the construction industry. He was an Assistant Professor at Concordia University and taught building science\, matrix analysis of structures and integrated building design courses. Krishnan has been a member of ASHRAE since 1995 and has served on various technical and society committees. Krishnan is a recipient of ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award and recognized as an ASHRAE Fellow in 2017. He is currently the Chair of 2027 Applications Handbook Subcommittee and serves as a member of the Board of Governors of ASHRAE Puget Sound Chapter. Krishnan spends his leisure volunteering for non-profit educational organizations and anything tennis – as a player\, stringer\, certified official and coach.

Jim Vallort\, ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer\, has spent his career focusing on energy: ranging from measuring energy usage\, optimizing the systems\, integrating automation to control energy and the impact of commissioning on energy consumption. Jim brings a unique perspective having been on the engineer of record\, 3rd party commissioning and contracting sides of project delivery. Jim served as an ASHRAE Society Vice President for the 2015-2016 Board of Directors. He currently serves as a member of Technical Committee (TC) 7.9\, Building Commissioning and Guideline Project Committee 1.6\, Commissioning of Data Centers . Jim previously served on the Board as a director-at-large in 2005-08 and as Region VI director and Regional Chair in 2001-04. Jim has over 20 publications and numerous presentations under his belt on topics ranging from Energy Efficiency\, Automation and Commissioning to Underfloor Air Distribution. Achieving a Green Data Center: More than a Good Design Is Needed The concept of a Green Data Center is difficult to perceive with a building full of computers consuming electricity. So the goal for a green data center is to minimize the energy consumed by the facility that does not go into computing power. To achieve this reduction the site selection\, facility program\, design\, installation and operations all play an equal role. I will discuss some current trends and design strategies for high performance in various climates. Also I will present some keys to maintaining the edge of a high performance site such as Cx at turnover\, seasonal testing\, operations plans for changing IT loads\, EBCx as operations change\, Cx of added equipment during the life of the data center and most importantly – annual monitoring and operational adjustments. These concepts\, success stories and some common pitfalls will be presented. Intelligent Buildings – Technology is changing what is possible in the built environment There is a lot of buzz around Intelligent\, or Smart\, Buildings\, but what is an Intelligent Building? This presentation will examine the answers to this question and how you can put your building on its path to a “higher education”. Advancements in technology have given the engineer the ability to aggregate and share data across disparate systems thereby creating opportunities to increase energy and operational efficiencies\, improve occupant comfort\, safety\, productivity\, and enrich the visualization capabilities for the organization’s numerous internal and external stakeholders. Lindsay is the Business Development Leader for Trane Technologies’ Thermal Energy Storage systems. He has been involved in thermal energy storage research\, engineering\, sales\, and operation for over 30 years. Bruce received his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University. He received a Master of Science in Energy Resources at the University of Pittsburgh\, where he taught graduate engineering courses. He received a Master of Management from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. Bruce began his energy career at Peoples Natural Gas in Pittsburgh in industrial sales\, conducting energy audits in Western Pennsylvania. He underwent special industry training and received a Chartered Industrial Gas Consultant designation. He was recruited by the Gas Research Institute to conduct national programs to develop new natural gas-fueled cooling and heating systems. Description: “Electrification” has recently become a widely accepted roadmap towards the goal of a low-carbon future. The concept is easily understood in the transportation sector: cars using fossil fuels as their on-board energy source can never be carbon free. However\, an electric car that is charged by a carbon free source\, can be carbon free. When applied to buildings\, one method is to envision stopping the flow of fossil fuels to them and having all energy come from the carbon-free grid of the future. Some skeptics of the concept believe it is a pipe dream to have a carbon-free electric grid but certainly you cannot have a carbon-free building if you are burning fossil fuels in them. Electrification will play a part in our low carbon future so understanding heat pumps\, “free cooling” and thermal energy storage’s relationship to them\, will be critical. The presentation will cover the multiple value streams of using thermal storage for heating and cooling in an all-electric building. Workshop Title: Moving Closer to Net Zero Buildings with the IAQ Procedure of ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2022 Speaker: Chris Muller Bio: Recognized as a world-wide authority on the topics of indoor/environmental air quality\, the application and use of gas-phase air filtration\, filtration and enhanced air cleaning\, corrosion control and monitoring\, and electronic equipment reliability. Written and spoken extensively on these and related topics with more than 175 articles and peer-reviewed papers\, more than 100 seminars\, and 8 handbooks. Contributed to chapters in two handbooks on the application and use of gas-phase air filtration\, wrote the chapter on contamination control in the ASHRAE Datacom Series Handbook – Particulate and Gaseous Contamination in Datacom Environments\, wrote a chapter on gas-phase air filtration in the NAFA Air Filtration Handbook\, a chapter on airborne molecular contamination in the Semiconductor Manufacturing Handbook\, 2nd Ed. published by McGraw-Hill\, and on Contamination Control in the upcoming Data Center Handbook edited by Hwaiyu Geng. Workshop Description: Being able to achieve IAQ goals while reducing energy consumption is one of the more valuable aspects of using ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2016: "Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality". By meeting the requirements of the IAQ Procedure\, one is allowed to take credit for the application of validated air cleaning technologies and reduce the amount of ventilation air that has to be heated and/or cooled. Revisions to Standard 62.1 have caused some confusion in its use and the application of energy conservation measures. This presentation will discuss the status of the Indoor Air Quality Procedure\, review the applicable provisions of the Standard\, discuss indoor air quality models in use\, and provide examples where the IAQ Procedure has been successfully employed as part of an energy conservation program. There will also be a discussion of current activities to make it easier to validate the IAQ Procedure and make it more useful to the engineering community when designing "net zero" energy buildings. Although microgrids are interconnected to larger utility networks\, they are capable of disconnecting and operating independently; thereby\, offering the potential to increase resiliency. Because the generation of electricity needs to constantly balance the demand\, some form of energy storage is important to maximize the potential benefits of microgrids. This presentation will discuss how thermal energy storage is a strategic technology to incorporate into microgrids and how thermal storage can actually increase the proportion of electricity generated by renewable energy to further increase reliability. Presenter: Douglas Reindl is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition\, he is the founding director of the Industrial Refrigeration Consortium (IRC) at UW-Madison. Professor Reindl has taught at all levels: undergraduate\, graduate\, and continuing professional development. Rather\, energy models allow designers to go beyond aesthetics and see options through the lens of energy performance. The speaker identifies four phases where models improve energy performance and provide compelling evidence that energy models quantify performance of ideas that designers are interested in exploring. The speaker presents a scalable energy model workflow\, and even share insights where models pay for themselves\, including changes to the 179D energy efficiency tax deduction enabled by the Inflation Reduction Act. Speaker: Keilly Witman Keilly Witman is the Department Lead of the Refrigerant Management Solutions Group at DC Engineering. She works to help refrigerant end-users transition to environmentally friendlier refrigerants\, implement best practices to reduce refrigerant emissions across their facilities\, and comply with the increasing number of refrigerant regulations in the US. Keilly has held over 100 webinars on refrigerant management and co-authored best practice guidelines for refrigerant leak prevention and repair\, installation leak tightness\, and R-22 retrofits. Keilly began her career at the US EPA\, where she launched the GreenChill Advanced Refrigeration Partnership\, a first-of-its-kind partnership with retailers to transition to environmentally-friendlier refrigerants\, reduce their refrigerant leaks\, and save money. During her tenure the partnership grew to include over 12\,000 supermarkets nationwide. She was named by Supermarket News as one of the 50 Most Influential People in the Supermarket Industry in 2010. Conlan\, P.E.\, BCxP\, CxA\, LEED AP BD+C \, has over 27 years of commissioning and design engineering experience and has completed projects in a variety of building use categories. Projects have included laboratories\, central utility plants\, hospitality\, themed entertainment\, pharmaceutical\, gaming\, mission critical\, and healthcare. Wade is an active participant in many levels of ASHRAE\, including being a past Chapter President\, Regional Refrigeration Chair\, and many roles at society. Topic Description: Morning Session 1: Monitoring Based Commissioning and Fault Detection Diagnostics: Using Big Data and Engineering to Improve Facility Performance Buildings are using way more data points for their operation\, beyond the HVAC systems BAS\, to be able to measure and verify that they are operating within energy and comfort parameters. The use of Monitoring Based Cx (MBCx) or Fault Detection Diagnostics (FDD) for ongoing commissioning can help keep the systems in line for energy use as well as maintaining a high level of IEQ. These processes can also be used for improving the existing buildings in an owner’s portfolio. Learn how to use MBCx and FDD\, in your designs\, construction\, commissioning\, and retro-commissioning of the built environment. Morning Session 2: Weighing the Pig vs. Making it Fly: Improve Energy Performance while Maintaining IEQ through Retro-Commissioning A lot of existing building stock needs to have its energy\, and thereby operational carbon\, improved if we are to meet the challenges for net-zero energy or carbon-neutrality in the next few decades. The improvement of the existing building stock\, which is often looked at as energy hogs\, can be greatly improved through the retro-commissioning process. This session covers the stages of weighing the pig (benchmarking) versus actively making improvements for systems. Actual projects for laboratories\, hospitality and gaming\, and university facilities will be used to demonstrate how to use retro-commissioning to make your pig fly. Lunch Meeting: ASHRAE Standard 241-Control of Infectious Aerosols ASHRAE\, through its Epidemic Task Force\, provided timely leadership in responding to the COVID19 pandemic from March 2020 through June 2022. At the request of the White House\, ASHRAE undertook its own project Warp Speed to build on that expertise for the future. In December 2022\, the ASHRAE Board committed to quickly writing a standard to make buildings more resilient against infectious aerosols ahead of the next epidemic. In only four months the project committee created and won approval for ASHRAE Standard 241-2023. In this Lecture a member of the 241 project committee will provide a summary of the standard including its purpose\, scope\, and key requirements with supporting background.
