SUMMARY:October Chapter Meeting 2016
DESCRIPTION:Location: Idaho Power Building 1221 W. Idaho St. Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare The October meeting will discuss the use of radiant systems in buildings heating and cooling. This presentation will showcase several buildings that have successfully incorporated radiant systems and controls. Radiant systems are increasingly popular as they can provide great comfort while using very little energy. Half of net-zero energy buildings use radiant systems to meet most of their heating and cooling loads according to a 2012 survey. Some buildings rely on very simple rule-based schemes while others are using cutting edge model-predictive controls. This overview of radiant systems will cover current best practices and a look at what may lie ahead for these efficient (if unwieldy) HVAC components. This month’s speaker is Damon Woods a PhD candidate at the University of Idaho and a research assistant at the U of I’s Integrated Design Lab (IDL) in Boise. Tickets $0.00 Member Ticket $15.00 Guest Ticket

SUMMARY:January 2016 Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Location: Idaho Power Building 1221 W. Idaho St. Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare This months meeting we will learn about three different projects being undertaken by mechanical engineering graduate level students in the valley. Dammon Woods is a PhD student at University of Idaho\, Boise\, Dammon will present on model predictive control of radiant slab heating and cooling systems. Radiant HVAC systems have been receiving increased attention recently because they have been shown to provide better thermal comfort are able to use far less energy than air based HVAC systems. However\, it takes considerable time for radiant systems to respond to thermostat signals. This research will use the tools of energy simulation and model prediction to develop control strategies that account for this delay and can also reduce electrical demand during peak hours. This research track will also pursue the extent to which radiant slabs can be used for utility demand response as thermal capacitors. Shrief Elsayed Shrief is a Graduate student at University of Idaho\, Boise. Shrief's thesis research is focused on utilizing energy modeling in building design and operation. The first part of the research is a sensitivity analysis aimed towards developing a retro-commissioning tool. The hypothesis is that detecting energy signature shape change caused by a deviation of operational parameters from the design\, could be useful in diagnosing that deviation. The research used EnergyPlus to create a library of energy signature shape changes caused by known deviations in some operational parameters. This library\, with the help of an artificial intelligence tool\, such as an ANN pattern recognition algorithm\, could identify deviations in some key operational parameters such as lighting and HVAC controls. The second part of the research is a cost-benefit analysis looking into the impact of ventilation on IAQ and energy consumption Hanna Luthman is Graduate student at Boise State University and will present on a "User Friendly" spreadsheet based analysis for air conditioning systems and how their efficiency is affected by the weather. Please come out to learn the latest techniques being used by these young professionals and spend some time with your colleagues. SUMMARY:February 2015 Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Location: Idaho Power Building 1221 W. Idaho St. Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Water Saving Technology for Evaporative Cooled Systems Water availability for plant and building operations is a primary strategic business concern. The availability of water for evaporative applications will be scarce in many areas based on ten to twenty year climatic projections. Increased regulations on potable water use\, water treatment and disposal costs may further limit the practicality of using evaporative only cooled equipment. Manufacturers of evaporative cooled equipment have recently introduced various hybrid systems to help their customers comply with water use restrictions. Hybrid systems may incorporate an evaporative coil and dry coil in series\, separate dry coil circuits above the discharge air stream or the addition of extended fins to bare coils. The most recent hybrids include wetted adiabatic pads or misting nozzles on the air intakes that reduce the incoming dry bulb to the dry condenser. This presentation will describe the various hybrid technologies\, their water saving potential\, operational pros and cons and recent verification testing programs of their actual versus advertised water savings. SUMMARY:September 2014 Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Location: Idaho Power Building 1221 W. Idaho St. Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Watch the recorded presentation HERE . Practical Noise Control – Avoiding the Sound Traps Earl Mullins\, PE (mechanical) will talk about the practical aspects of noise control. He has been an acoustical consultant for 30 years now\, and has worked on more than 2100 different major and minor projects around the western US and around the world. Learn about commonly tried sound reduction techniques that accomplish little or nothing. You will be able to apply information from this talk to your current work. Also feel free to bring specific questions about a current noise problem you are encountering. We start with the "how" and "why" of sound production and sound transmission\, then cover the basic principles of noise control\, and explain some of the industry jargon. We finish with case studies of some real-world projects\, describing the noise control solutions that were used. This is a technical presentation about noise control\, not a sales pitch for any particular product. You will leave with a better understanding of noise control principles\, and hopefully enough knowledge to avoid making the most common errors. There is great value in simply knowing when to ask questions about noise. The program always includes a few minutes for Q & A. Program length including Q&A typically runs 55-60 minutes. Tickets $0.00 Member Ticket $15.00 Guest Ticket
