BIM allows the designer to track thousands of building components in 3-D and thus detect potential interferences. It also makes it easy to visually display a potentially complex design in a way that building owners can easily understand. Similarly\, building energy simulation (SIM) has evolved into a powerful tool for evaluating the energy performance of potential or existing buildings. Building simulation allows easy comparison of the energy and environmental performance of many hundreds of design or retrofit options. Because much of the data that building simulation tools require already exists in the BIM models\, it’s critical that simple methods for sharing that data are available. This presentation describes the opportunities and challenges for sharing data between BIM and SIM and demonstrates recent advances in data exchange. About the Speaker: Drury B. This means that the remaining 95% of our commercial buildings are experiencing reduced energy performance each year. This trend in existing buildings can be changed by the implementation of a Technical (testing based) Retro-commissioning (RCx) program that incorporates technical energy audit procedures\, measurements of building performance metrics\, savings calculational procedures and corresponding financial analysis methodologies that building owners can understand and interpret for developing both short term and long term programs for building systems’ upgrades. Case studies are presented for various RCx projects that demonstrate the advantage of conducting a Technical RCx program and the merit of implementing an Ongoing Commissioning (OCx) program for a building owner to be able to maintain a sought level of building performance for an ongoing basis. (9:30am – 10:30am) This presentation integrates the requirements of “The 2030 Challenge” with the methodologies of achieving a Sustainable Future that ASHRAE has developed along with the procedures of the various phases of an effective High Performance Integrated Design program that utilizes a technical commissioning approach to ensure the level of performance that the owner expects. To illustrate the presented design\, construction and performance verification phases for high performance buildings’ projects\, examples of applications that have proven performance levels (3+ years of recorded performance data) will be presented during the program. The materials that will be discussed will be based in part upon ASHRAE’S Advanced Energy Design Guides for 30% and 50% steps toward Net-Zero Energy Buildings. The culmination of the program will be the presentation of various pathways in a prescriptive format of achieving Net-Zero Energy Buildings. Getting From AEDGs to Net-Zero Energy Buildings (10:30am – 11:30am) ASHRAE’s Vision 2020 Producing Net Zero Energy Buildings establishes a time-line to develop the necessary guidance to achieve Net-Zero Energy Buildings by 2020. The basis for this guidance will be the Advanced Energy Design Guides (AEDGs) series as well as publications pertaining to advanced Indoor Environmental Quality and Comfort. Today there are numerous examples of Net-Zero Energy Buildings as demonstrated during ASHRAE’s Net-Zero and Beyond Conference in 2009. This presentation will cover the guidance contained in the existing AEDG documents for different building types and climatic zones\, IEQ design guidance for high performing buildings\, along with examples of buildings that have successfully demonstrated 30%\, 50% and greater savings over the requirements of 90.1 including various Net-Zero Energy facilities. Various levels of “Prescriptive Guidelines” will be provided for all building systems and components along with “Lessons Learned” by the participants who have achieved Net-Zero Energy Buildings.

SUMMARY:May 2018 Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Location: Idaho Power Building 1221 W. Idaho St. Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare IAQ Lunch Workshop May 9\, 2018 – Bradley Harr\, Summit Environmental\, Inc. Mr. Harr will provide an update on what is new in the science and politics of indoor air quality and the IAQA organization. Many ASTM and IICRC Standard Practices related to IAQ are undergoing review and there is extensive debate on what is “best practice” in the industry. The added involvement of international Consensus Body members on the IICRC IAQ related committees has expanded the discussion on best practices\, worker protection\, and consumer Right to Know issues. There are also new cleanup Standards out for buildings under going restoration from crime scene cleanup and fire repair. A lot of contractor work addresses IAQ concerns and the complex question of how clean is clean. Mr. Harr will also discuss the moving IAQ target for indoor air formaldehyde concentrations. Another interesting current event is that the medical community has become very active in pushing for more radon abatement in buildings. The tie to non-smoker lung cancer has finial hit home with the medical community. Many US homes and commercial buildings are operating under negative pressure due to HVAC systems and radon levels often exceed US EPA guidelines. The World Health Organization is promoting an IAQ radon guideline of 2.7 piC/L; whereas\, the US EPA is still at a higher risk 4.0 piC/L guideline. You can see from the smiles that everyone was appreciative and excited to get started. The technology club will be assembling the 3D printer at their meeting on Wednesdays after school. When it’s finished all of the students in the school will be able to use it. Our hope is this will be an annual thing going to a different school each year being funded through the chapter. The idea is to channel some of our resources to local STEM outreach in public schools. Look for an opportunity to help with this effort when you register for the Bowling Tournament. SUMMARY:January 2018 Chapter Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Location: Idaho Power Building 1221 W. Idaho St. Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Sheila Hayter is the incoming ASHRAE society president. She works as the Project Assessment and Development Section Manager within the Integrated Applications Center (IAC) of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden\, Colorado. In this capacity\, she leads a team of technical and policy experts who support federal\, state\, and local entities on energy efficiency (EE) and renewable energy (RE) topics with the goal to make significant reductions in non-renewable energy consumption through energy efficiency and increased use of RE technologies. Sheila’s work includes serving as the IAC partnership development lead and managing key accounts for the IAC and NREL\, including serving as the NREL Key Account Manager for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Sheila’s past activities include leading DOE’s Solar America Cities technical assistance activities for Boston and New York City\, with the goal to assist these municipalities incorporate strategies into policies\, procedures\, and specific projects that will result in widespread application of solar technologies. Since joining NREL in 1992\, Sheila’s work has included serving on the Organizing Committee and leading the subjective judging component of the 2002\, 2005\, and 2007 DOE Solar Decathlons\, managing sustainable buildings activities funded by the DOE Federal Energy Management Program\, managing the Photovoltaics (PV) for Buildings activities funded by the DOE Solar Program\, evaluating building performance during the design and monitoring phases to support the DOE High Performance Buildings Program\, and writing papers\, giving conference presentations\, and developing/giving training related to high-performance buildings. Sheila is registered professional engineer in the State of Colorado. Sheila served on the ASHRAE Board of Directors as a vice president (2009 – 2011) and also as a Director at Large (2005 – 2008). She chaired the Publications and Education Council\, has served on Technology Council\, Finance Committee\, Planning Committee Society Rules Committee\, Research Activities Committee (chair 2004 – 2005)\, Continuing Education Committee (chair 1998 – 1999)\, and ASHRAE Program Committee. She chaired the Greening ASHRAE Meetings and Exposition presidential ad hoc committee (2006 – 2008)\, and was a member of the Building Energy Labeling\, ASHRAE Logo\, Globalization Roadmap\, and Strategic Plan IV ad hoc committees as well as served as a member of the Advance Energy Design Guide Steering Committee. In addition\, Sheila has served in leadership roles of many technical committees. Sheila received a 2007 NREL Staff Award for outstanding performance\, 2007 Professional Progress Award from Kansas State University’s College of Engineering\, and an ASHRAE Technology Award in 1999. She received the ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award in 2001 and the Exceptional Service Award in 2011 and was named an ASHRAE Fellow in 2008. Meeting Topic: Integrating Renewable Energy Systems into Buildings This presentation introduces technical opportunities\, means\, and methods for incorporating renewable energy (RE) technologies into building designs and operations. The speaker will give an overview of RE resources and available technologies used successfully in the USA to offset building electrical and thermal energy loads. Methods for applying these technologies in buildings and the role of building energy efficiency in successful RE projects will be addressed. The speaker will discuss issues related to connecting RE systems to existing electrical grids and offer tips for implementing successful RE projects. Dustin has been heavily involved in the industry shift to natural refrigerants and is a member of the NASRC (North American Sustainable Refrigeration Council). Eagle Road Meridian\, ID 83646 \nShare 2nd Annual ASHRAE Scramble Bowling Fundraiser Bring your Family out for a night of Bowling fun at Big Al's to benefit the Idaho Chapter of ASHRAE. Paid Registration Includes… 2 Hours of Bowling Shoe Rental 2 slices of Pizza Bottomless Soda Registration Costs… $30 – Individual Adult Registration $15 – Individual Kid Registration (High School & Younger) $150 – Team Registration (5 to 6 people) Bowling Format: 5 or 6 person Tag-Team Bowling Entire team rotates turns bowling frames on the same game . 1st Team member bowls 1st frame\, 2nd team member bowls 2nd frame\, 3rd team member bowls 3rd frame\, etc. until all 10 frames have been bowled (15-20 minutes). Final Team score for each round is recorded. DESCRIPTION:Location: Idaho Power Building 1221 W. Idaho St. Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare The February meeting is titled is “Indoor Environmental Quality : Beyond ASHRAE 62.1”. The presentation examines both current practice and guidelines established by ASHRAE\, and provides an introduction to the benefits of improved IEQ\, including energy savings and the health and productivity of the building occupants. The Speaker: Elizabeth Cooper\, Director – Integrated Design Lab Elizabeth is interested in the integration of design\, construction and sustainability with human health. Her work includes the assessment of aggregate exposures to indoor chemical pollutants\, environmental control systems for buildings\, indoor environmental quality and high performance energy efficient buildings. She is an associate professor at the University of Idaho’s College of Art & Architecture and the Director of the Integrated Design Lab. Elizabeth obtained her Baccalaureate in Biological Sciences from Mount Holyoke College\, a Master of Architecture from the University of Oregon\, and a Master of Science in Environmental Health\, from the University of Washington. The presentation focuses on performance based energy code compliance as an alternative to prescriptive energy code compliance. The presentation will highlight reasons to pursue performance paths\, some of the mandatory measures in energy codes\, differences between energy codes\, and offer a glimpse into the future of performance based code compliance. The Speaker: Tim Johnson\, PE\, BEMP\, with the CTA Group Tim has 9 years of experience as a Design Engineer specializing in energy analysis and energy modeling using eQUEST\, EnergyPlus\, and other energy modeling software. His experience also includes mechanical and plumbing design and document production for schools\, commercial offices\, supermarkets\, healthcare\, light industrial buildings\, and government buildings. His mechanical design experience includes developing energy efficient designs incorporating energy modeling and analysis techniques such as life cycle cost/payback analysis\, improving ease of system maintenance\, and developing construction drawings and specifications. Tim is a Certified LEED AP BD+C\, ASHRAE Certified Building Energy Modeling Professional (BEMP)\, Certified Green Globe Professional and holds a Professional Engineering License in Idaho and Nevada.
