Dr. Crawley holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee\, is a registered architect\, an ASHRAE Fellow\, and a recipient of numerous industry awards for his contributions to building energy modeling\, standards development\, and sustainability. The key decarbonization methods are then described including offset strategies\, electrification technology applications\, and ways they can be implemented in the building sector. The program provides an overview of how to use computer assisted building performance analysis systems and ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G to maximize the design team’s ability to achieve the greatest number of credits when seeking project certification under a building performed rating system. Speaker Bio: M. Dennis Knight joined ASHRAE in 1979 and has been working in the building design\, construction\, and operations industry since 1974. He served as ASHRAE President for the 2024-25 society year. He provides engineering\, design\, and construction-related services within the building industry. Before his presidential year\, Mr. Knight served as a Director at Large\, Vice President\, Treasurer\, and President-Elect on the ASHRAE Board of Directors\, and holds the membership grades of ASHRAE Fellow and Presidential Member. Active at the local\, state\, and national levels with various agencies and professional societies\, he works to help develop sustainable\, integrated building design guidelines and standards. Nationally\, as a member of ASHRAE\, Mr. Knight is a member and former chair of Standards Committee SPC 224 – "The Application of Building Information Modeling"\, is the former Chair of Technical Committee (TC) 7.1 "Integrated Building Design\," and served as chair of the ASHRAE Building Performance Analysis Specialty Conference for six years. Boyce\, P.Eng.\, Fellow/Life Member ASHRAE\, was the ASHRAE President for the 2019-2020 term. Boyce has previously served on the board of directors as treasurer\, vice president\, Director and Regional Chair Region 2 and director-at-large. Boyce is retired and was previously special advisor to the vice-president (Finance and Administration) – and the assistant vice president of facilities management and planning – at Carleton University in Ottawa\, Ontario. Throughout his time spent with ASHRAE and in the HVAC industry\, Boyce has worked on various projects to increase energy efficiency. His most recent projects include the SNOLAB project in Sudbury\, Ontario\, where he is responsible for the design and construction of a world class research facility for underground science. Boyce is a 1982 graduate of the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and earned his Engineering Diploma from the British Columbia Institute of Technology in 1973. Description: The presentation will review the research requirements and describe how these were translated into the design scope for the facility to be located 6\,800 feet below ground level. We will walk through the construction challenges and review the strategies to keep this specialized facility on budget in a challenging underground construction environment. Front Street Boise\, ID 83702 \nShare Title: Implementing Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) Speaker: Terry Rodgers Description: Too often site maintenance programs are implemented independently of the facility construction effort and in many cases almost as an after-thought. The best approach is to literally incorporate the design\, development\, and implementation of the maintenance program in the design\, construction\, and commissioning of the physical facility. This includes establishing the objectives\, requirements\, strategies\, and performance criteria of the maintenance program in the same site programming effort and Owners Project Requirements (OPR) document as used to capture and define the same aspects of the physical facility. Similarly\, the development of the Basis-of-Design (BOD) document should incorporate aspects of what “means and methods” will be employed by the maintenance program to meet the OPR maintenance objectives. Speaker Bio: Terry is an ASHRAE Distinguished Lecturer and a voting member of ASHRAE TC9.9 "Mission Critical Facilities\, Data Centers\, Technology Spaces\, & Electronic Equipment"\, ASHRAE SSPC 90.4 "Energy Standard for Data Centers”\, ASHRAE SPC-127 "Method of Testing for Rating Computer Room Air Conditioners”\, and GPC-1.6P “Commissioning Process for Data Centers”. His dissertation used energy models paired with weather forecasts to predict how a radiant slab should be managed to maximize occupant comfort. His current research focus is on the integration of surface temperatures into building energy management systems. Dr. Woods has taught courses in advanced thermodynamics and energy modeling. In the office\, he spends his time working on energy models and estimating savings from energy upgrades; out of the office he is usually fly fishing or gardening. Dr. Woods earned his B.S. from Montana State University\, his M.S. from Boise State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Idaho. Description: This session will cover the most cost-effective strategies engineers can use to minimize energy use when designing a new multifamily or mixed-use project. The speaker will provide data on the major energy uses in multifamily buildings in Idaho and how to estimate annual utility bills for the tenants (including Idaho Power’s new multifamily rebate program). This presentation will include new and existing code requirements around ventilation and noise transmission. For example\, you cannot just ventilate corridors and use door gaps to pull air into apartments. There will be a few case studies presented and information from ASHRAE’s Advanced Energy Design Guide to hopefully inspire your creativity when it comes to your next multifamily design. Bio: Krishnan Gowri\, Energy Solutions Krishnan Gowri has more than thirty years of experience in the construction industry as a building science and building performance expert. Krishnan received his undergraduate degree in Civil and Structural engineering from Annamalai University in India and obtained his Masters and Doctoral degrees in Building Engineering from Center for Building Studies at Concordia University\, Montreal\, Que. He is a student of Dr. Paul Fazio\, founding Director of Center for Building Studies. As a graduate student\, Krishnan conducted research in integrated building design and advanced computer applications for the construction industry. He was an Assistant Professor at Concordia University and taught building science\, matrix analysis of structures and integrated building design courses. Krishnan has been a member of ASHRAE since 1995 and has served on various technical and society committees. Krishnan is a recipient of ASHRAE Distinguished Service Award and recognized as an ASHRAE Fellow in 2017. He is currently the Chair of 2027 Applications Handbook Subcommittee and serves as a member of the Board of Governors of ASHRAE Puget Sound Chapter. Achieving a Green Data Center: More than a Good Design Is Needed The concept of a Green Data Center is difficult to perceive with a building full of computers consuming electricity. So the goal for a green data center is to minimize the energy consumed by the facility that does not go into computing power. To achieve this reduction the site selection\, facility program\, design\, installation and operations all play an equal role. I will discuss some current trends and design strategies for high performance in various climates. Also I will present some keys to maintaining the edge of a high performance site such as Cx at turnover\, seasonal testing\, operations plans for changing IT loads\, EBCx as operations change\, Cx of added equipment during the life of the data center and most importantly – annual monitoring and operational adjustments. These concepts\, success stories and some common pitfalls will be presented. Intelligent Buildings – Technology is changing what is possible in the built environment There is a lot of buzz around Intelligent\, or Smart\, Buildings\, but what is an Intelligent Building? Lindsay is the Business Development Leader for Trane Technologies’ Thermal Energy Storage systems. He has been involved in thermal energy storage research\, engineering\, sales\, and operation for over 30 years. Bruce received his undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University. He received a Master of Science in Energy Resources at the University of Pittsburgh\, where he taught graduate engineering courses. He received a Master of Management from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. Bruce began his energy career at Peoples Natural Gas in Pittsburgh in industrial sales\, conducting energy audits in Western Pennsylvania. He underwent special industry training and received a Chartered Industrial Gas Consultant designation. He was recruited by the Gas Research Institute to conduct national programs to develop new natural gas-fueled cooling and heating systems. Description: “Electrification” has recently become a widely accepted roadmap towards the goal of a low-carbon future. The concept is easily understood in the transportation sector: cars using fossil fuels as their on-board energy source can never be carbon free. However\, an electric car that is charged by a carbon free source\, can be carbon free. When applied to buildings\, one method is to envision stopping the flow of fossil fuels to them and having all energy come from the carbon-free grid of the future. Some skeptics of the concept believe it is a pipe dream to have a carbon-free electric grid but certainly you cannot have a carbon-free building if you are burning fossil fuels in them. Electrification will play a part in our low carbon future so understanding heat pumps\, “free cooling” and thermal energy storage’s relationship to them\, will be critical. The presentation will cover the multiple value streams of using thermal storage for heating and cooling in an all-electric building. Workshop Title: Moving Closer to Net Zero Buildings with the IAQ Procedure of ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2022 Speaker: Chris Muller Bio: Recognized as a world-wide authority on the topics of indoor/environmental air quality\, the application and use of gas-phase air filtration\, filtration and enhanced air cleaning\, corrosion control and monitoring\, and electronic equipment reliability. Written and spoken extensively on these and related topics with more than 175 articles and peer-reviewed papers\, more than 100 seminars\, and 8 handbooks. Contributed to chapters in two handbooks on the application and use of gas-phase air filtration\, wrote the chapter on contamination control in the ASHRAE Datacom Series Handbook – Particulate and Gaseous Contamination in Datacom Environments\, wrote a chapter on gas-phase air filtration in the NAFA Air Filtration Handbook\, a chapter on airborne molecular contamination in the Semiconductor Manufacturing Handbook\, 2nd Ed. published by McGraw-Hill\, and on Contamination Control in the upcoming Data Center Handbook edited by Hwaiyu Geng. Workshop Description: Being able to achieve IAQ goals while reducing energy consumption is one of the more valuable aspects of using ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2016: "Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality". By meeting the requirements of the IAQ Procedure\, one is allowed to take credit for the application of validated air cleaning technologies and reduce the amount of ventilation air that has to be heated and/or cooled. Revisions to Standard 62.1 have caused some confusion in its use and the application of energy conservation measures. This presentation will discuss the status of the Indoor Air Quality Procedure\, review the applicable provisions of the Standard\, discuss indoor air quality models in use\, and provide examples where the IAQ Procedure has been successfully employed as part of an energy conservation program. There will also be a discussion of current activities to make it easier to validate the IAQ Procedure and make it more useful to the engineering community when designing "net zero" energy buildings. Although microgrids are interconnected to larger utility networks\, they are capable of disconnecting and operating independently; thereby\, offering the potential to increase resiliency. Because the generation of electricity needs to constantly balance the demand\, some form of energy storage is important to maximize the potential benefits of microgrids. This presentation will discuss how thermal energy storage is a strategic technology to incorporate into microgrids and how thermal storage can actually increase the proportion of electricity generated by renewable energy to further increase reliability. Presenter: Douglas Reindl is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition\, he is the founding director of the Industrial Refrigeration Consortium (IRC) at UW-Madison. Professor Reindl has taught at all levels: undergraduate\, graduate\, and continuing professional development. Professor Reindl has developed an internationally recognized series of professional development courses focused on industrial refrigeration systems with an emphasis on the safe use of ammonia as a refrigerant.
