DESCRIPTION:Location: Idaho State University – Idaho Falls 1776 Science Center Dr.\, Suite 304 Idaho Falls\, ID 83402 \nShare This meeting will be held in-person in Idaho Falls with an in-person watch party in Boise at the Cushing Terrell office and will be available virtually. *There will be a 30 minute networking and informational session starting at 4:30pm in Idaho Falls and the presentation will begin at 5:00pm* Overview: Microgrids are smaller networks that include electric generation and distribution capability to provide power to users. Although microgrids are interconnected to larger utility networks\, they are capable of disconnecting and operating independently; thereby\, offering the potential to increase resiliency. Because the generation of electricity needs to constantly balance the demand\, some form of energy storage is important to maximize the potential benefits of microgrids. This presentation will discuss how thermal energy storage is a strategic technology to incorporate into microgrids and how thermal storage can actually increase the proportion of electricity generated by renewable energy to further increase reliability. Presenter: Douglas Reindl is a professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In addition\, he is the founding director of the Industrial Refrigeration Consortium (IRC) at UW-Madison. Professor Reindl has taught at all levels: undergraduate\, graduate\, and continuing professional development. Professor Reindl has developed an internationally recognized series of professional development courses focused on industrial refrigeration systems with an emphasis on the safe use of ammonia as a refrigerant. Through the IRC\, Professor Reindl works with some of the world’s leading food companies to improve the safety\, efficiency\, reliability and productivity of industrial refrigeration systems and technologies. Title: Diversity\, Equity\, Inclusion and ASHRAE: Does it really matter? Description: In 2020\, ASHRAE’s Board of Directors approved a Diversity Commitment for the Society and established a Proactive Diversity Task Group with a goal to recommend detailed programs and initiatives seeking to eliminate all forms of discrimination and social injustice\, and proactively drive diversity through all levels within ASHRAE. This led some members to ask “why?” As a technical engineering society\, shouldn’t ASHRAE be focusing its efforts and the efforts of its volunteer members on industry-related research and education\, rather than furthering what some consider to be a political agenda? What role\, if any\, should ASHRAE play when it comes to diversity in the AEC community and social justice? Is there really a problem that needs to be solved? This highly-interactive\, engaging and thought-provoking presentation will tackle these questions head on by: • Reviewing ASHRAE’s current Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion initiatives • Defining terminology – What exactly does DEI mean? • Discussing metrics\, trends\, and research • Encouraging a respectful exchange of ideas through an online digital platform than ensures privacy and anonymity. Speaker: Devin Abellon\, P.E. Bio: Devin Abellon\, P.E. is the Director of Engineered Solutions at Pac West Sales. He has 30 years of experience in the HVAC and plumbing industries with a focus on highperformance and sustainable building design and construction. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara and is a registered professional engineer in California and Arizona. He has been an active member of ASHRAE at the chapter\, regional and society levels and currently serves as an ASHRAE Society Vice President\, on ASHRAE’s Planning Committee and the Board of Directors DEI Advisory Subcommittee.
